The Race

Take on the challenge of the iconic Gold Hill Cheese Race – for free! Join us for this uniquely Shaftesbury event as competitors race up the famously steep and cobbled Gold Hill, each carrying a round of locally made cheese. Whether you're entering solo, as part of a team, or just coming to soak up the atmosphere, this exhilarating and lighthearted tradition is a must-see. As part of the Shaftesbury Festival, the event is completely free to enter, and we’ll be in touch closer to the date with your approximate race time.

While there is no entry fee, we encourage all participants to support our two local charities, BADCO and BOOBS, by making a donation. You can also grab some exclusive Gold Hill Cheese Race merchandise [insert link], with all profits going towards these charities and the Shaftesbury & District Chamber of Commerce. For the first time ever, every contestant will receive a medal as a keepsake of their participation, proudly featuring the official Gold Hill Cheese Race logo. Sign up now and be part of this unforgettable tradition!

There are several different categories depending on your age and sex. The cheese is an imitation of a truckle and comes in a variety of weights depending on your category. Adult males will be carrying a 25kg truckle up the hill whereas children will be carrying a polystyrene truckle of the same dimensions.
